ACT at the UN International Day of Zero Waste 2025

The UN International Day of Zero Waste, facilitated by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and UN-Habitat, serves as a crucial reminder of the global waste crisis and the urgent need for sustainable waste management.

Every year, humanity generates between 2.1 billion and 2.3 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste, with estimates projecting that this figure will reach 3.8 billion tonnes by 2050. Without immediate intervention, the waste crisis will continue to threaten human health, biodiversity, and global economies.

Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles

This year’s theme, Towards Zero Waste in Fashion and Textiles, highlights the significant environmental impact of the fashion industry. With 73% of textiles ending up in landfills or incinerated, addressing waste in this sector is paramount. The conversation focused on promoting circularity, innovative recycling solutions, and responsible consumption habits.

ACT had the honor of participating in this global event, showcasing our upcycled products, discussing textile recovery solutions, and emphasizing the need for collection and recycling infrastructure in Africa. Throughout the event, global leaders stressed the necessity of localized systems to manage textile waste, reinforcing the work we are doing at ACT.

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) – The Key to Sustainable Fashion

One of the key discussions revolved around Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)—a policy framework that holds producers accountable for the entire lifecycle of their products. EPR ensures that brands take responsibility for the waste they create, from production to post-consumer disposal. As global conversations around EPR gain momentum, ACT continues to advocate for policies that encourage producers to adopt sustainable practices and contribute to waste management solutions.
